When they arrived in Spain in June 1982 for their first participation in the World Cup, the Algerian selection tiptoed. When they left the country barely a month later, Madjer's teammates, Belloumi and Dahleb, were true heroes and unfortunate victims. Between the two, they achieved one of the greatest feats in world football, beating Germany in the first group match (2-1), before being eliminated in the “match of shame”. At the time, the last group matches were played in a staggered fashion, leaving plenty of time for the Austrians and Germans to settle on a score favorable to both.
Since then, the Fennecs have participated in the final stages of the World Cup three other times. But none will have marked the world as much as the 82 generation. Which included Salah Assad, shooting star of this Algerian Dream Team. A hero who has completely disappeared from circulation, the fault of a political commitment in favor of the FIS which earned him to spend 4 years in detention in a camp in the Sahara.
