Zaire's qualification for the 1974 World Cup surprised the rest of the world who were unaware that the African nation was experiencing the most glorious era in its footballing history. African champion in 1968, at the time when the country was still called DR Congo. the team returned to success in 1974 thanks to a repeat victory against Zambia and 9 goals from the tournament's top scorer, Mulamba Ndaye.
The Zaire campaign in West Germany proved disastrous for various reasons. The three group guards were lost, and the defeat (9-0) against Yugoslavia was particularly humiliating for Zoran Vidinio, the coach of Yugoslav origin of the Zaire team.
