When the Netherlands kicked off their 1974 World Cup campaign against Uruguay, they had never won a single match in the competition. Wearing orange jerseys in honor of William I of Orange-Nassau, the "father of the nation," and emblazoned with the golden lion emblem of the national coat of arms, the Oranje were a force to be reckoned with. One player in particular stood out: Johan Cruyff. And not just for his footballing prowess. While his teammates sported three-striped jerseys, the hallmark of their sponsor Adidas, Cruyff only had two. He explained: "The kit supplier's contract didn't include a single penny for the players. The federation wouldn't hear of it, even though they owned the orange jersey, I was the sole arbiter of what I wore! "
