1974 marked a turning point in Vasco da Gama's history, as they became Brazilian champions for the first time. The 1975 campaign was not as successful, as, under the management of Mario Travaglini, Vasco were eliminated in the second phase of the competition. Nevertheless, the team remained strong and competitive, thanks to influential players such as Argentinian goalkeeper Edgardo Andrada, defenders Fred and Joel Santana, midfielder Gilson Nunes, and an impressive attack comprised of Edu Antunes, Ademir, and star striker Roberto Dinamite.
