Ever since Just Fontaine scored his 13 goals at the 1958 World Cup, a legend has lingered in the history of French football: Justo wasn't supposed to be a starter in the competition, and he only earned his place due to an injury to the other Stade de Reims striker, René Bliard. A strange affair that needed to be clarified eventually. This has been done in the book *Forgotten Heroes of the World Cup* , which revisits the most famous of sporting competitions with the style that made *So Foot* magazine so renowned .

And what better way to read this book than to don the jersey of the first golden generation of French players, the blue, white, and red, who emerged in the immediate post-war period? Kopa, winger Jean Vincent, and Justo thus enabled France to reach the semi-finals. The absence of Robert Jonquet in defense weighed heavily in the defeat against Brazil (5-2), but it didn't prevent the French from finishing on the podium after a resounding victory (6-3) against West Germany in the third-place match.
