In the aftermath of the revolutionary years of the 1950s, football received little attention from the new communist regime . The national team had adopted a more international outlook during Batista's time, but the early 1960s saw matches become less frequent under Castro, and when they were played, they were usually friendly matches, most often lost, against neighboring countries . Although two friendly matches were played in 1962, just days apart, against Puerto Rico and Jamaica, the Cuban Missile Crisis a few months later plunged football even further into obscurity. This self-imposed isolation lasted until 1965, when Cuba made a strong comeback and participated in the qualifiers for the 1966 World Cup .
