In the 1970s, Portuguese football was still influenced by the golden generation of the mid-1960s, characterized by the presence of iconic players such as Eusébio and the arrival of Jordao. The Portuguese national team had failed to qualify for the 1970 World Cup in Mexico, but they continued to seek to reassert themselves on the international stage. In 1972, Fernando Cabrita was in charge of the Portuguese national team.
