Pedal Newsletter 2022

Who says July says Tour draws!

It's the event of the summer! The return of the Tour de France! Which also and above all announces the release of our new issue of Pedal! The twelfth of the name. With the best French chance of the year on the cover.

To celebrate the release of the best cycling magazine in the world ( which you can find everywhere in France and even in Belgium thanks to these links), the editorial team is offering you 5 new prints as well as special mugs to discover on our online store.

Concerning the prints, after the Pantani classics...

...Bernard "The Badger" Hinault...

...or Tourmalet, all already available on the store...

...we offer you new photos, often older, with the passion of the crowd and the support for the runners during the stages as common points. You will therefore find magnificent photos of stages of the Giro in particular, but also of other cycling races, during the 50s, 60s and 70s . And of course, a photo from the Tour with Virenque during one of his epic duels with Jan Ullrich.
This selection can of course be found now on our boutique.so !

Photos

And we start with the editorial staff’s favorite . A splendid photo which smells of early morning family gatherings, battles for the best places and long picnics waiting for runners. We are here in 1975 during a stage of the Coppa Sabatini which takes place in Peccioli , not far from Pisa, in Italy. This photo clearly captures the moment of an attack on a runner. In this case, Francesco Moser . At the finish, victory will not be this year for the former cyclist with 250 podiums in the professional world, but the Italian, who participated once in the Tour de France, will win this event in 1978 and finish twice 3rd in the 1980 and 1982 editions. But just with this photo, he had already won our hearts, so just for that, thank you Francis!

We go back in time a little, but we continue to pedal ever harder, this time with a photo during a time trial . A bit like his sporting director's car in the background, we follow Silvano Schiavon during the Forli Grand Prix in 1967 . This event, which no longer exists today, took place in Emilia-Romagna , a decidedly land of speed with the Formula 1 Grand Prix. In this photo which clearly shows the evolution of our favorite sport, we can clearly feel the concentration of the rider and his team, Vitadello , on the Castrocaro Terne circuit.

We continue our journey into the past and arrive in 1955 with a man who changed the discipline forever. Angelo-Fausto Coppi , still today considered one of the greatest cyclists of all time. Indeed, his track record is as long as the “Monte Trebbio” which he tries to climb in this very beautiful photo of him during the Tour of Romagna (which is now called the Tour of Romagna and Coppa Placci).
The “C ampionissimo ” is: 2 Tours de France, 2 Tours d’Italie, a Paris-Roubaix, a Flèche Wallonne and many other prestigious trophies won. Above all, he is the first rider to complete the Tour of Italy and Tour de France double , and twice more (1949 and 1952). They say that you recognize a great athlete when he leaves his mark on his sport over time and Coppi, with his new approach to the discipline towards more professionalization, has brought cycling into a new era. So here is for you, a drawing of the legend…

A new black and white photo, dating from the 1969 Giro . Always with these long lines of spectators on the sidewalks, coming to watch the runners pass through their city, sometimes on their doorstep. Here we are this time in Montecatini . But this 1969 edition of the Tour of Italy was especially marked by the exclusion of the legend Eddy Merckx for doping . A dark story with hints of attempted corruption on the part of Rudi Altig . The teammate of the future winner, Felice Gimondi , was in fact a rival of the Belgian and was ready to do anything to convince him to give up. Merckx was finally cleared shortly after by the UCI. In short, this photo represents Aldo Moser, cautious in the rain, hands on the brakes, under the eyes of an attentive public, who will finish 7th in the general classification.

And the best for last with obviously a draw of the most beautiful competition in the world : the tour of France . The editorial team has decided to select a particularly lively edition for you, that of 1997 . In this photo, we also find the two main protagonists, Jan Ullrich and the immense Richard “ Cœur de Lion” Virenque, in the ascent towards Courchevel . A beautiful illustration of the fight between the two runners. And despite the unfailing support of the spectators on the different stages and the “ Virenquemania ”, this will not be enough to get ahead Ullrich. The latter becomes the first German to win the Tour.

The mugs

So that the cycling spirit never leaves you, we present to you the 7 mugs from the Pédale collection . With legendary cycling quotes, taken from legendary interviews published in previous issues. We start with Fignon and a piece of advice that we want to see applied during this Tour...
We all know someone who is aware of their qualities and their faults like Leblanc...

But also someone happy to be who he is like Virenque...

Cycling brings people together, as Chiappucci said...

This sport also allows you to confront yourself. Isn't it Mr. Lefévère ?

On the other hand, we're not here to laugh either, we understand Mr Merckx...
Guimard obviously had problems with his mother...
And finally, according to Moreau , cycling is friends. Without forgetting the doctor...
Hope you find your happiness ! And whether this is the case or not, don't hesitate to follow us directly on Instagram where we highlight as often as possible the beautiful photos from the immense collection of our partner: the Icon Sport photographic agency .

All these bike prints are available on the boutique.so since July 1st at 6:00 p.m.
