1974 marked a turning point in the history of Vasco da Gama, who became Brazilian champion for the first time. The 1975 campaign did not enjoy the same success as, under the management of Mario Travaglini, Vasco was eliminated in the second phase of the competition. This team nevertheless remained strong and competitive, thanks to influential players like Argentine goalkeeper Edgardo Andrada, defenders Fred and Joel Santana, midfielder Gilson Nunes and an impressive attack consisting of Edu Antunes, Ademir and star Roberto Dinamite.
